A hail-damaged Calgary roof needs a full replacement when the damage covers more than one slope, when the existing shingles can't be matched, or when the roof is already near the end of its life. Isolated damage on one slope is a repair. Most roofs hit by a real Calgary hailstorm land in the first group, because hail falls on every exposed slope and bruises shingles that still look fine from the ground. Whether insurance pays for that replacement depends on a written, slope-by-slope damage report and on your policy wording, especially whether it pays replacement cost or depreciated value. Good Roofing has coordinated 2,800+ Calgary roof installations and repairs since 2014, helped homeowners recover $14M+ in hail claims, and holds 4.9★ from 237 verified reviews. Quick answer — the 60-second version (citation-ready)

Replace the roof after hail if any one of these is true: damage appears on two or more slopes; the shingle line is discontinued or the colour can't be matched; the roof is near the end of its service life; or a repair would mean lifting so many sealed shingles that the surrounding roof gets damaged in the process. Repair if the damage is limited to one slope or a few spots and the shingles are still available. Insurance pays for full replacement when the adjuster's inspection finds hail damage across the roof that meets the carrier's own threshold, which is why a written slope-by-slope report before the adjuster visits matters. Check two lines in your policy: replacement cost or actual cash value, and any Roof and Siding Limitation Endorsement. Good Roofing replaces hail roofs with full tear-off and Class 4 impact-rated shingles, backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty. Call (587) 804-9266.

The repair-or-replace decision, slope by slope

Hail falls on the whole roof, but it rarely damages every slope the same way. Storm direction, slope pitch and shingle age all change how much bruising each face takes. That is why the decision is made per slope first, then for the roof as a whole. These are the five checks a Good Roofing inspection runs before recommending either option.
  • 01How many slopes are damaged. Strikes on the windward slopes only, often the west and north faces in a Calgary storm, can sometimes be handled by replacing those slopes. Damage on most faces points to a full roof.
  • 02What kind of damage it is. Granule loss that exposes the mat, soft spots where the mat is bruised, and cracked or torn tabs all shorten shingle life. Cosmetic scuffing on a newer shingle may not.
  • 03Whether the shingles can be matched. A repair needs the same product and colour. Many builder-grade lines installed on Calgary homes 15 or more years ago have been discontinued, and new shingles in an old colour name rarely match weathered ones.
  • 04How old the roof is. An older roof that takes hail will fail sooner than its age suggests. Spending money on repairs to a roof that needs replacing in a few years usually costs more in total.
  • 05Whether a repair will hold. Swapping shingles means breaking the seal on the courses above. On brittle, aged shingles, every lifted tab is a new spot for Chinook winds to grab.

How insurance decides between repair and replacement

Your roofer recommends; your insurer decides what it pays for. Adjusters typically examine a sample area on each slope, count hail strikes that broke or bruised the shingle, and compare that count to the carrier's internal threshold. Meeting it on most slopes usually leads to a full-roof approval. Meeting it on one slope may lead to a slope replacement or a repair allowance. Two things change the outcome more than homeowners expect.
  • 01Evidence on the day of inspection. The adjuster scopes what is visible. If shingles were patched or sealed before the visit, the damage that justified a replacement may be gone. A temporary tarp over an active leak is fine and expected. Permanent repairs before the adjuster comes are not.
  • 02A roofer at the inspection. Good Roofing meets the adjuster on site with drone photos of every slope and strike counts per area, so the scope reflects the whole roof and not only the slopes visible from a ladder.
  • 03Who we work with. Our crews have met adjusters from Intact Insurance / belairdirect, Aviva Canada, TD Insurance, Co-operators, Wawanesa Mutual and other carriers active in Alberta.
  • 04What a denied replacement looks like. If the adjuster approves a repair but your shingles can't be matched, ask in writing how the insurer will address the mismatch. Coverage for matching depends on your policy wording, so read the answer before work starts.

What your policy pays on a hail replacement

An approved replacement does not always mean a fully paid roof. Three policy terms decide the cheque. Replacement cost versus actual cash value: replacement-cost policies pay to put on a comparable new roof, often in two payments with a holdback released after the work is done. Actual-cash-value coverage subtracts depreciation for the roof's age, which is why some Calgary homeowners with older roofs pay a large share of a replacement themselves. The deductible: some Alberta policies use a flat deductible and others use a separate, percentage-based hail or wind deductible. Our Calgary roof insurance deductible guide shows how each one works. Roof and Siding Limitation Endorsement: this wording limits payouts on roofs past a set age to depreciated value. Find it before the claim, because it changes whether filing makes sense at all. What a proper hail replacement includes

A replacement paid for by a hail claim should leave the roof stronger than the one the storm damaged. Every Good Roofing hail replacement is a full tear-off to the deck, never a layover on top of bruised shingles. The crew replaces damaged sheathing, installs ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, replaces dented vents and flashing, and installs Class 4 impact-rated shingles. Class 4 is the top rating under UL 2218, which tests whether a shingle survives a 2-inch steel ball dropped onto it without cracking. In Calgary's hail belt that rating is the default we install, and some Alberta insurers offer a premium discount for it, so ask yours. If your claim covers a standard shingle, the upgrade to Class 4 is a priced line in the written quote. See hail-resistant roofing options for Calgary for the products we install, from manufacturers including IKO, Malarkey Roofing Products, Owens Corning, BP / Building Products of Canada.

The order that protects your claim

Calgary homeowners lose money on hail replacements in two ways: waiting too long to file, and signing with a contractor who arrived after the storm. Follow this sequence. Photograph dented eavestroughs, vents and downspouts from the ground. Book a hail damage roof inspection and get the written report. Read your policy for the deductible, the valuation basis and any roof endorsement, then call your insurer and report the date of the storm. Ask your roofer to attend the adjuster's inspection. Compare the adjuster's scope with the roofer's line by line before signing anything. Good Roofing doesn't door-knock after storms and doesn't work with out-of-province crews; our storm-chaser warning guide explains what to watch for. We reply to calls within 1 business hour, and the inspection report is yours to keep whether or not you hire us.
