Quick answer
Calgary sits in one of the most hail-prone corridors in Canada. Here is what the impact ratings test, which roofing materials hold up best, where the marketing overstates it, and how to choose a roof for the next storm.

No roof is fully hail-proof, but a roof rated Class 4 under the UL 2218 impact test is the most hail-resistant roof you can put on a Calgary house, and it is the standard Good Roofing installs by default. Class 4 asphalt shingles, stone-coated steel and polymer or rubber composite panels all reach that rating. They differ in price, appearance and what their warranties cover when hail does hit. We have coordinated 2,800+ Calgary roof installations and repairs since 2014, recovered $14M+ in hail-claim settlements, and hold 4.9★ from 237 verified reviews.

Class 4 roofing options for Calgary, compared
- 01Class 4 architectural asphalt shingles. The most common choice in Calgary and the lowest cost per square of the three. They look like standard laminated shingles and come in the full range of colours. Lines we install include Owens Corning Duration Storm, IKO Nordic and Malarkey Vista AR. Most use a rubberized (SBS-modified) asphalt that flexes on impact instead of fracturing.
- 02Stone-coated steel. Steel panels with a bonded stone-granule finish that can look like shake, tile or shingle. Steel resists penetration very well and sheds snow, but heavy hail can leave dents, and many metal warranties exclude cosmetic damage. See our DECRA stone-coated steel guide.
- 03Polymer and rubber composite panels. Panels moulded from synthetic or recycled rubber compounds, often made to look like slate or shake. They absorb impact and some manufacturers back them with hail-specific warranties. They cost more than Class 4 asphalt, and fewer Calgary crews install them, so ask how many the installer has done.
- 04Standing-seam metal. Very durable and long-lived. Thicker gauges resist hail well but can dent visibly, and not every panel carries a Class 4 rating, so check the spec sheet for the exact profile and gauge. Our Calgary metal roofing page covers profiles and costs.

How to choose: five questions to ask before you sign
- 01What is the exact product name and impact rating? Ask for the line name and its UL 2218 class on the quote. "Hail-resistant" without a class number means nothing.
- 02Is every component rated? Ridge caps, starter strips and accessories should come from the same system, or the weakest piece fails first.
- 03What does the warranty cover after hail? Penetration and leaks, or cosmetic dents and granule loss too? Get the hail clause in writing.
- 04Who installs it, and are they certified for that product? Manufacturer warranties often require a certified installer. Our partners include IKO, Malarkey Roofing Products, Owens Corning and others.
- 05Is it a full tear-off? A Class 4 shingle laid over an old roof cannot sit flat and loses much of its impact resistance. Every Good Roofing job is a full tear-off to the deck.
