Most Calgary wind damage is a small repair: re-sealing or replacing wind-lifted and missing shingle tabs typically costs $300–$650, and Good Roofing can tarp an exposed roof within about 4 hours of your call, any day. The damage that turns into a full re-roof is the kind nobody sees from the ground: shingles that broke their adhesive seal during a gust, flapped, and laid back down unbonded. Those leak at the next rain or the next Chinook melt. Calgary’s wind season runs through the winter, when Chinooks roll off the Rockies, and peaks again with summer thunderstorm downbursts, so a roof here takes wind loads in every month. The Calgary pages that rank for wind damage today list warning signs and offer tarping. None publish a repair price, explain how a shingle’s wind rating depends on its nailing, or say when a wind claim is worth filing against a percentage deductible. This page covers all three. Good Roofing has coordinated 2,800+ Calgary-region roofs since 2014 and holds 4.9★ from 237 verified reviews.

Why Calgary roofs fail in the wind
- 01Ridge caps and hips. Wind speeds up as it crosses the peak, and ridge caps are short pieces held by two nails each. Stripped ridge caps are the most common wind call we get after a Chinook.
- 02Eaves and rakes. The edges catch the wind first. If the starter strip was never sealed, or the first course was nailed high, the whole edge peels back in sheets.
- 03West- and southwest-facing slopes. Chinooks blow from the west and southwest. Homes on the city’s western edge and on open ridgelines (Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, Springbank Hill, Aspen Woods, Signal Hill) face those gusts with nothing to break them.

How to tell if your roof has wind damage
- 01Shingle pieces in the yard or on the driveway. Any piece on the ground means a gap on the roof.
- 02Dark patches on the roof. Black or grey rectangles are exposed underlayment where tabs have blown off. Underlayment is not built to sit in the sun and snow for long.
- 03Tabs that lift or ripple in a breeze. These shingles have lost their seal. They look fine on a calm day and leak in the next storm.
- 04Creased shingles. A horizontal line across a tab means it bent back far enough to break the mat. A creased shingle has to be replaced, not re-sealed.
- 05Bent flashing, loose vent caps or a hanging eavestrough. Metal pulled away from a chimney or wall lets water straight into the framing.
- 06Inside the house. New ceiling stains, damp attic insulation, or daylight visible through the attic deck.

What wind damage repair costs in Calgary
- 01Wind-lifted and missing shingle tabs: $300–$650. We replace creased or missing tabs, hand-seal lifted ones with roofing cement, and renail with six fasteners per shingle. We match colour and product line where the shingle is still made.
- 02Pipe boots, step flashing and vent caps: $380–$900. Common after a storm that also carried hail or debris.
- 03Valley flashing and leak-path repairs: $700–$2,400. When wind-driven rain or meltwater has already found a way in, the repair includes the wet decking.
- 04Emergency tarp and leak-stop: $450–$850, including after-hours dispatch. Tree-limb removal plus tarp runs $650–$1,400, depending on limb size and whether decking needs patching first.
- 05Full replacement. When unsealed shingles are spread across several slopes, spot repairs stop making sense. See our Calgary roof replacement cost breakdown. We don't roof over existing shingles. Every job is a full tear-off down to the deck.

Wind ratings, nailing and the Calgary repair spec
- 01Six nails per shingle, placed in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, on every repaired course.
- 02Sealed starter strips at every eave and rake, so the edge has an adhesive bond from day one instead of waiting for summer heat.
- 03Hand-sealing in cold weather. Below about 10°C, factory adhesive does not activate. On winter repairs we hand-seal each new tab with roofing cement so it does not lift in the next Chinook.
- 04Extra ridge-cap fastening and ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, which also stops the meltwater that a Chinook freeze-thaw cycle drives under the shingles.
- 05Class 4 impact-rated shingles on replacements. We don't install Class 1 or Class 3 shingles by default — Calgary’s hail belt requires Class 4 impact-rated. We install lines from IKO, Owens Corning, Malarkey Roofing Products and GAF, and the quote names the product and its wind rating.

Wind damage and your home insurance claim
- 01Your deductible type. Many Calgary policies now carry a separate wind/hail deductible of 2–5% of dwelling coverage instead of a flat amount. On a $500,000 dwelling, 2% is $10,000. A $650 tab repair is not worth a claim against that. A torn-off slope with interior water damage may be.
- 02A dated storm. We match the damage to the date of the wind event and photograph it slope by slope, with close-ups of creased and missing tabs, so the claim shows sudden damage rather than age.
- 03Stopping further damage. Policies expect you to protect the home after a loss. Tarp the roof promptly and keep the invoice; emergency tarping is normally part of an approved claim.
