Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® shingles are a Class 3 architectural asphalt shingle with the patented SureNail® reinforcement strip, a 130 mph wind warranty, StreakGuard™ algae resistance, and a limited lifetime material warranty — and in Calgary’s hail belt the right install decision is almost always to step up to the Class 4 impact-rated variant (Duration® STORM®) for the insurance discount and the deductible-only re-roof economics after a hailstorm. Good Roofing is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor (which is the certification required to validate the 50-year material + workmanship system warranty), has coordinated 2,800+ Calgary installs since 2014, and has recovered $14M+ for Calgary homeowners on hail-damage insurance claims using OC products. Call (587) 804-9266 for a fixed written quote on a Duration or Duration STORM Calgary install — most quotes are returned inside 1 business hour.

Duration vs Duration STORM — the decision Calgary buyers actually have to make
- 01Choose base Duration (Class 3) if your home sits outside the documented Calgary hail-strike density corridor (typical west-of-Crowchild SW pockets), you do not plan to claim hail discounts on your home insurance, and you are matching the existing manufacturer/class of shingle on a partial re-roof or detached structure (garage, shed).
- 02Choose Duration STORM (Class 4) if your address sits in NE, NW, or SE Calgary, you want to qualify for the 5–15% Alberta hail-resistant-roof premium discount, or you have ever filed (or want to keep your home eligible to file) a hail claim. STORM has the same SureNail / TruDefinition / StreakGuard system as base Duration — it adds the polymer-modified rubberized asphalt that earns the Class 4 UL 2218 rating.
- 03Price gap is small. The all-in install delta between Duration and Duration STORM on a Calgary 30-square asphalt re-roof is typically only $1,400–$2,200. The first hail deductible (versus an uninsured re-roof) more than pays for the upgrade in one claim cycle.
- 04Warranty is identical. Both products carry the limited lifetime material warranty plus the 130 mph SureNail wind warranty (extendable to 130 mph with Preferred Contractor System Pak). STORM additionally publishes the Class 4 impact certification on the product datasheet — the document your insurer needs to apply the discount.
- 05What we install by default. We don't install Class 1 or Class 3 shingles by default — Calgary’s hail belt requires Class 4 impact-rated. On a Calgary roof, the “safe” default is Duration STORM unless the homeowner specifically asks otherwise.

What an Owens Corning Duration roof actually costs in Calgary (2026 numbers)
- 01TruDefinition® Duration® (Class 3), 30-square single-storey re-roof: $5.20–$6.40 per square foot all-in. Total $15,600–$19,200 on a typical 3,000 sqft roof area.
- 02TruDefinition® Duration® STORM® (Class 4 IR), 30-square single-storey re-roof: $5.80–$7.10 per square foot all-in. Total $17,400–$21,300 on a typical 3,000 sqft roof area.
- 03What that price includes. Full tear-off to the deck, deck-rot inspection (first 4 sheets of replacement OSB included), synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water shield in valleys + at all eaves (Alberta code-required on re-roofs), pre-bent aluminum drip edge, new pipe boots, new ridge venting, OC starter strip on eaves and rakes, OC hip & ridge cap, magnet-sweep, dump fees, permit, GST.
- 04What it doesn’t include. Soffit/fascia/eavestrough (priced separately), skylight replacement, deck rebuild beyond first 4 sheets ($110/sheet thereafter), steep-pitch surcharge above 8/12, two-storey surcharge ($0.30/sqft typical).
- 05Through a hail-damage insurance claim, homeowner out-of-pocket drops to the deductible only — typically $1,000–$2,500 — regardless of which Duration variant is specified. $14M+ recovered across Intact Insurance / belairdirect, Aviva Canada, TD Insurance, Co-operators and every other major Alberta carrier.

Insurance discount math — the actual Alberta numbers
- 01Intact Insurance / belairdirect: 5–10% home premium discount on confirmation of UL 2218 Class 4 IR roof, applied at next renewal. Documentation required: shingle product datasheet, paid invoice, photo of installed product.
- 02Aviva Canada: Up to 10% Hail Resistant Roof Endorsement discount, applied at renewal. Same documentation set.
- 03TD Insurance and Co-operators: 5–15% discount range depending on product type and home characteristics. Co-operators in particular has a strong impact-rated-roof program in Alberta.
- 04Wawanesa Mutual and Economical/Sonnet: Variable; ask your broker to file the “impact-resistant roof” endorsement and resubmit.
- 05The bigger number isn’t the premium — it’s the deductible math. A Calgary home with a Class 4 roof that takes hail typically still pays only the deductible to re-roof, because the same impact-rated spec passes the “like kind and quality” rule on the replacement. A Class 3 roof in the same neighbourhood pays the deductible AND eats the depreciation gap (ACV vs RCV) on any older shingle.
- 06How to claim the discount: Once installed, email your broker the OC Duration STORM product datasheet, our final signed invoice, and a roof photo. The discount applies at your next renewal. Good Roofing assembles the discount documentation packet for every Calgary Duration STORM install — no extra charge.
