Calgary hail season — what to do before and after.

Before the season (April–May)

Photograph your roof from the ground. Walk all four sides of your home with your phone, take photos of the roof and any aluminum (downspouts, soffit). These become your “before” evidence if you need to file a claim later.

Confirm your home insurance policy. Check your deductible. Confirm hail damage is covered (it is, in essentially every Alberta policy). Note any age-of-roof or actual-cash-value clauses.

Get a pre-season inspection if your roof is over 15 years old. A baseline drone inspection establishes the roof’s condition before hail. This makes any subsequent claim much cleaner.

During the season (June–August)

After every severe-thunderstorm cell that brings hail to your neighbourhood, do a 5-minute ground inspection:

• ·Walk the perimeter. Look at downspouts, AC unit fins, soffit aluminum, gutters. Any dents?
• ·Look for granules in the downspouts (coarse black sand).
• ·Use binoculars to scan the roof for shiny spots where granules have been knocked off.
• ·Photograph anything you find.

If you see any dented aluminum — book a roof inspection. Aluminum dents at lower force than roofs need to bruise, so if your downspout is dented, your roof took the same hit.

After visible damage

• ·Don’t panic. Most insurance carriers accept claims for the past 12 months in Alberta.
• ·Get a drone inspection from a Calgary roofer (free, takes 24 hours for the report).
• ·Open the claim with your insurer.
• ·Request your roofer be present for the adjuster inspection.
• ·Don’t sign anything from an out-of-province storm chaser at your door. They’ll vanish in October.
