How to actually win a Calgary hail-damage insurance claim.
The Calgary roof insurance claim process step by step — what to do, what to say, and where homeowners typically lose.
The claim is won in the documentation
Calgary insurance adjusters are usually fair professionals. They’re also under time pressure, they see hundreds of roofs a week, and they can only pay for damage they actually see and write down.
That’s the entire game. The homeowners who get their full entitled scope are the ones whose roofer documents the damage thoroughly before the adjuster arrives, and walks the roof with them on inspection day.
The five-step process we run on every Calgary hail claim
Step 1 — Free drone inspection & damage report (free, takes 24 hours). We image every slope at 4K, count hail strikes per square, and email you a written photo report. You forward that report to your insurer when you open the claim.
Step 2 — You call your insurer to open the claim. Don’t describe damage you’re not sure exists. Just say: “I had a Calgary roofing contractor inspect my roof after the [date] hailstorm and they documented hail damage. I’m opening a claim.”
Step 3 — Adjuster books an on-roof inspection. Most insurers send their own adjuster (or a contracted one like Crawford or Cunningham Lindsey). The adjuster will tell you when they’re booking. Tell them you want your roofer present. That’s your right and it dramatically improves outcomes.
Step 4 — We meet your adjuster on the roof. We walk every slope together, show them every chalk-circled strike, and answer questions. This is where 90% of the claim’s value is determined.
Step 5 — We supplement the scope if the initial estimate is light. Adjusters miss things — flashing, ventilation, drip edge, ice-and-water-shield. We submit a supplement with photos showing the additional scope required. Most supplements are paid.
What homeowners typically lose on
Without a roofer in your corner, here’s where claims get under-paid:
- ·Slope-only replacements when the homeowner is entitled to a full roof. (Different slopes age together; if one is damaged enough to replace, the others usually need it too.)
- ·Repair vs replacement. Adjusters sometimes write “repair” on a roof that’s actually past serviceable life. Repair on a bruised roof fails within 2–3 years.
- ·Code-required scope. Calgary code requires new ice-and-water-shield and new flashings on a re-roof. Adjusters sometimes miss this.
- ·Matching considerations. If your shingle colour is discontinued and only half the roof is damaged, you may be entitled to the whole roof to ensure colour match. Adjusters don’t always offer this — you have to ask.
What we don’t do
We don’t fabricate damage. We don’t inflate scope. Insurance fraud is a felony and would destroy a 10+ year Calgary business in a single phone call.
What we do is document the damage that’s actually there, advocate for the full scope you’re entitled to under your policy, and supplement when the adjuster’s initial number falls short of what you’re owed.
The numbers
In our experience, Calgary clients who handle their own claim get the full entitled scope about 30% of the time. Clients we represent get it about 90% of the time. Same insurance carriers, same damage — different outcome.
